They say that Malta is a place you either love or hate.!!! I must be strange because I do not love it or hate it.! For me Malta has a charm of its own and I am sure that some people will love it and return time and time again. Others will hate it and never return, I also understand this. My advice to a first time visitor would be this.!!! Go only for a week, go in the spring or autumn when the weather is not too hot or cold and windy. Do not hire a car but use the bus system which is cheap and comprehensive. Use it to visit the many places of interest. You will run out of time to see it all, this may encourage return visits. There is a lot of history on Malta, 5,000 years plus worth. The Island is Catholic so there are very many beautiful Churches, both ancient and more modern. For me Malta is a very small Island that I found a little claustrophobic after 2 weeks, after my 4th week I felt that I had to find some space, I was looking forward to going home to wide spaces and countryside. Malta has history and its own culture, but it has very little natural beauty with the exception of the blue grotto and one or two other places. The roads are terrible as are many of the drivers. But I will defend its CHARM.! A short first holiday with lots of sight seeing would be my advice to a first time visitor. Do not do what I did "go there for 4 weeks in the winter". To be honest Malta's worst winter for 85 years did not help me, even though there were some nice days as my photos will show.!!! |
