The pit head and waiting people. Thursday January 16th 1862. 204 men and boys aged between 10 and 71 years of age died in the worst ever British pit disaster. The funeral cortège was still leaving the Village of New Hartley as the first bodies were being interred at Earsdon Village 4 miles away. The lists of names below.
